The arroyo system was created to funnel water away from the mountains and into the Rio Grande. Most of the year the arroyos are dry but I love to walk along Acequia Madre, "the mother ditch" in Santa Fe when the water has been released and is flowing freely along the arroyo in Spring, as depicted here.
